One of the difficulties on a beginning artist’s path is modeling form with hatching, which, combined with a weak grasp of value, produces a big negative effect.
The most important thing for creating good volume is telling the zones of illumination apart properly and knowing how to model them well.
The main trouble is that many artists confuse light with shadow (they over-darken the light and blow out the shadow), and the result is a mush that has to be avoided.
