About the course

Six lessons, roughly two hours forty minutes of video, four theory blocks and two practice sessions. The theory covers graphic device and composition, materials and value, strokes and edges, and techniques taken apart on examples of form, silhouette and color. The practice is a study of an apple and a separate recording with a pear, where volume is built with the stroke instead of being blurred out with a soft brush.

The sore spot of beginner digital painting is over-blending. The piece gets worked over with a big soft brush until the form goes plastic, and the color temperature meanwhile doesn’t change at all: the shadow is painted in the same color as the light, only darker. The lessons build the opposite approach — first three or four value shapes, then the edges where the form turns, refinement last of all, and warm-cool watched from the very first stroke.

In a week you end up with two finished studies made with one technique on different objects. That’s enough to tell whether a painterly approach suits you before you take on a long course. You need a tablet or an iPad with a stylus and any editor with pressure: Procreate, Photoshop, Krita, Sketchbook.

The mini-course comes with the Club plan and isn’t sold separately. The subscription opens all the mini-courses at once, along with the video lesson archive and the reference packs. Video plays only in the built-in player; working files and lesson references can be downloaded.
