About the course
Three lessons of about an hour and a half, planned for a week of practice: a breakdown of form, light and shade and silhouette, the full recording of drawing an apple, and a timelapse of the same piece at real speed. The process is shown two ways — pencil on paper and Procreate on an iPad. Any program with layers and brushes will do, because this is about drawing, not about an interface.
It starts with what almost everyone who has held a pencil for a month trips over: the object is built with an outline, and volume gets added at the end with hatching. Here the order is the other way round. First the layout on the page and the big form, then the value relationships between the core shadow, the halftone and the reflected light, and only then the hatching, which goes along the form and not across it.
At the end you have one finished drawing of an apple: with the layout found, the shadow terminal set and the accents placed. Not much — and exactly enough to see how to approach the next object without being told. For materials you need a pencil and paper, or a tablet with a stylus.
