About the course
Twenty lessons in three modules, about six hours of video, three weeks. The first module is stylized props: a berry, a piece of cheese and a mushroom, on which the working order itself gets set, from concept and sketches to blocking, color, render and three steps of building volume. The second is a sword and arrows — that is, metal, wood and fletching. The third is a stylized character and packing the project into a presentation template.
Props come first not as a warm-up. A berry shows exactly the same thing a character does: until the core shadow, the cast shadow and the darkening in the contact zone are in place, the object sits on the background like a sticker. And materials differ not in color but in the character of the highlight — on metal it’s narrow and sharp, on wood it’s smeared and follows the texture. On simple forms that mistake doesn’t drown in details, which is why it gets taken apart here.
You finish with three completed pieces put into a presentation: a set of props, the weapons and the character. The lessons are recorded in Adobe Photoshop CS5 and up. In Procreate or Clip Studio Paint the assignments still work, but the interface and the tool layout will be different — worth knowing before you choose. A graphics tablet is required.

And if you’ve long wanted to build a portfolio but can’t get going, you’ll finish the course with three pieces you can already show.
What you need to have
- A graphics tablet that connects to a computer (Wacom or similar)
- A computer or laptop running Windows or macOS
- Adobe Photoshop (CS5 or newer) — all the course lessons are taught in it. Procreate and Clip Studio Paint will also work
- All lessons are recorded in Adobe Photoshop — worth keeping in mind when you choose your program. The assignments can be repeated in Procreate or Clip Studio Paint, but the interface and tool layout will be different.
