A color portrait classically starts with a quick line sketch, after which we fill the planes with color shapes. One painting device I’d suggest trying is a bright pink-orange underpainting that shows through here and there and adds life to the work.

Once the main color shapes are in and the proportions are settled, get into the drawing and the value, shading the side of the face and the neck. Don’t forget the construction of the nose, the eye socket, the cheekbones and the chin.
